Writing a Cookbook

Why write a cookbook?

Cookbooks are an invitation to the kitchen and the table. They are powerful tools for recording history, capturing a culture’s cuisine, and preserving your own personal heritage. Writing a cookbook can be your legacy or your career. Conceiving an idea for a cookbook is easy. Transforming that idea into a book is much more difficult.

The first step is to ask yourself these three questions:

Can I write?

Can I cook?

Do I love my idea enough to see it through from to a book that I would want to work hard for every step of the way, especially when it comes time to promote it?

Ideally, your answers will be yes to all three questions. If you answered no to one or two I would recommend finding a co-author who can provide a set of skills to complement your own.

If you answered no to the third question I would recommend putting your idea on a back burner until the time is right or set it aside in favor of another idea. A book is hard work and the real heavy lifting usually happens after it’s released—the promotion and sales of it.
